Collection: The Youth of Mpoyi

The Youth of Mpoyi is a visual tribute to the spirit of young people growing up in the heart of rural Congo. Captured during a visit to the village of Mpoyi, this series highlights the resilience, joy, and quiet strength carried by its youth.

Through candid moments, playful movement, and intimate portraits, the images reveal a generation shaped by community, tradition, and hope. Each frame honors the beauty of their everyday lives—the laughter, the curiosity, the determination, and the dreams that rise from Mpoyi’s red earth.

This series invites viewers to see Mpoyi not only as a place, but as a living story told through the eyes of its children and teens—full of possibility, dignity, and light.

About the Artist

Mugisho Byamungu Etienne is an emerging Congolese painter whose work explores the tension between what we hide, what society expects, and what we long to become. Currently studying in the Painting Department at the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts, he creates introspective works that mirror the human search for wholeness through contrasts of shadow and light. His growing artistic presence includes a group exhibition at the National Museum of Kinshasa and participation in the Velasquez Project organized by the Spanish Embassy in the DRC.
